A City that Sparked Environmental Reform
The 1969 Cuyahoga River fire became one of the most visible symbols of water pollution in the United States and helped bring greater national attention to environmental protection.
Cleveland’s environmental story did not begin or end with one moment. It continues through the people who care for our water, neighborhoods, health, land, communities, and one another.
Our history reminds us that change often begins when people pay attention, speak up, share what they know, and refuse to accept that things must remain as they are.
