A City that Sparked Environmental Reform

The 1969 Cuyahoga River fire helped ignite a national environmental movement and elevate Cleveland’s role in shaping environmental policy and public awareness. That legacy continues to influence how communities approach climate action today.

Cleveland’s environmental history reminds us that community voices and public leadership can drive meaningful change.

“I am fearful that the priorities on air and water pollution may be at the expense of what the priorities of the country ought to be: proper housing, adequate food and clothing.”

— Mayor Carl B. Stokes

Built By Community

Cleveland Climate Week is a community-driven initiative. Events are organized by residents, educators, organizations, and local leaders in Cleveland and across Northeast Ohio.
